Feng Shui as a Path to Personal Growth

by Stephanie Roberts

One very valuable aspect of Feng shui is that it has a tendency to bring new opportunities and relationships that encourage us to relinquish ineffective behaviors and stretch outside our comfort zones. While this is not always comfortable, it can be powerfully transforming if we rise to the challenges presented by these opportunities. When we don't, choosing instead to remain safely sheltered by familiar behaviors and attitudes, we block the transformative power of feng shui and the significant transitions we'd hoped for often don't materialize.

I always recommend to my clients that they keep a feng shui journal. This notebook becomes a place to record how you plan to correct and enhance the energy of your home, how you follow through (or not) on those plans, the energy shifts that you experience as a result of changes made, your emotional reactions to the work, and the insights you gain from taking a different and deeper look at your life.

When it seems that feng shui isn't working, it's time to take a hard look at whether your attitudes and actions are supporting what you say you want to achieve. Here are some questions to ask yourself, based on the issues that you may be working on:

Career

Am I diligent about always communicating as openly and honestly as possible?
Do I look for ways to create opportunities for others while advancing in my career?
Do my actions consistently demonstrate my abilities, or do I sometimes take the easier path?
Self-Understanding

Do I respect the spiritual beliefs of others, even when they seem limiting or misguided?
Do I help others to learn and grow, and support them in achieving greater self-awareness, or do I usually put myself first?
Am I unflinching in exploring my own needs for growth, or do I pretend my negative habits don't matter?
Family, Health

Do I honor my family and friends in "thought, word, and deed," even when they behave selfishly or inconsiderately toward me?
How am I contributing to the quality of life in my community?
Am I a mindful inhabitant and caretaker of my body?
Prosperity & Abundance

Am I generous to others, even when my financial resources are thin?
Am I comfortable receiving the generosity of others?
Am I a wise caretaker of my assets?

Fame & Reputation

Do I recognize and applaud others' accomplishments?
Do I refrain from idle or malicious gossip about friends and co-workers?
Am I comfortable being in the spotlight?
Marriage & Romance

Am I supportive and nurturing to others?
Am I able to love without clinging, or do jealousy and insecurity undermine my relationships?
Am I comfortable receiving and giving love?
Creativity & Children

Do I listen to and act on my intuition, allowing it to guide me even when I am unsure of that direction?
How do I express my creativity in my every-day life and environment?
Do I support my children as individuals, rather than trying to mold them into "mini-me"s?
Helpful Friends & Travel

Am I asking for the help I need, and allowing others to provide assistance?
Do I take advantage of opportunities to try new things and explore new places?
How can I be a greater benefactor or mentor to others?
When feng shui is applied without this commitment to self-exploration, the effects may be short-lived or disappointing. For example, you may experience an increase in cash flow as a result of feng shui, but if you are a chronic over-spender that additional money will flow out as quickly as it came in and you'll still be mired in debt. Support your feng shui changes with conscious changes to your spending habits, and that additional cash flow becomes available to help pay off your credit cards and transform your financial situation.

The effects of feng shui can be slow and subtle or immediate and seemingly miraculous. Whether you experience dramatic improvements in your situation or a frustrating lack of results, you can gain additional benefit from feng shui when you explore your inner responses to outward transformation. Make a commitment to use feng shui as a path to personal growth, rather than as a quick fix for your problems, and you will inevitably achieve greater success in all aspects of your life.

Feng Shui Money Tips

by Stephanie Roberts

Do you know where your financial "power spots" are? The contemporary methods of feng shui associate prosperity issues with the back left corner of any space. Stand at your front door facing into the house; your wealth area is at the back of the house on the left-hand side. There's also a wealth area within each room: facing in from the doorway, it's the corner area in the back of the room on the left-hand side. Where are the wealth areas within your office, living room, kitchen, and bedroom? Now that you've identified your money power spots, here are some quick and easy ways to apply feng shui to these spaces:

..by Title ..by Author ..by Keyword ..by ISBN

1. Clear out any clutter from these important areas. Clutter is a sign of stagnant energy, and clutter in your money power spots can clog up your cash flow. Getting rid of clutter is one of the most powerful ways to shift the energy of your power spots into high gear.

2. Fix things that are broken. Anything that doesn't work as it should is a sign of something wrong in the area of your life that corresponds to that part of your space. Examine each of your money power spots to look for anything that needs repair. It's time to do something about that loose doorknob, non-working light switch, stuck file drawer, or clock that doesn't keep correct time, to name just a few possible examples. Remove items like these from your power spots or fix them so they work properly.

Your Ad Here
. Enhance your power spots with symbols of prosperity, such as a bowl of coins (add your loose change to it every day), a "lucky bamboo" plant, or anything that symbolizes success and prosperity to you. There are lots of Chinese luck symbols available, but you don't have to use them unless you want to. A picture of your dream house, or a model of that luxury car you long for, is an effective money symbol because it has personal meaning for you.

4. Accent your money areas with the colors green and purple. Green symbolizes vitality and growth, and purple is the color of wealth. Place a bowl of green and purple grapes (real or artificial) in the wealth area of your kitchen, to symbolize abundance filling your home. If you use real grapes, it's okay to eat them, just add more from time to time so the grapes remain fresh and the bowl is always more than half full.

5. Pay attention to how you handle money every day. Do you keep paper money neatly sorted in your wallet or money clip, or is it jammed in there any old way, or crumpled up at the bottom of your pocket? Clean the clutter out of your purse and wallet, and start handling your money as though you value it.

6. If you neglect your money, it will neglect you, so be sure to balance your checkbook regularly and pay your bills on time. Put your checkbook in an attractive cover (choose green, purple, red, blue, or black) and keep it in the wealth area of your desk - that's the rear left corner again -- or in the wealth area of your office.

7. Live generously. Money is a form of energy, and it needs to flow through your life, not just into it. Hoarding and scrimping work against more coming in, while giving generously within your means makes space for even greater abundance. If you don't yet have ample money to share, give as generously as you can of your time, energy, compassion, and appreciation.

8. Take a few moments every evening to think about all the good things that happened to you today and to express your gratitude for what you have received. Small things count, too, so it's okay if there's little of the spectacular on your list most of the time. It's not what happened that's important; it's getting in the habit of focusing on the positive side of things every day that matters. The more you notice, appreciate, and express gratitude for blessings received, no matter how small, the more good things will come your way, including money.

A true experience of prosperity is determined not by how much money you have, but by how well you notice and enjoy what is already present in your life. The formal name for the wealth area is "fortunate blessings" - as you de-clutter, repair, and accessorize your money power spots keep this broader meaning in mind. When you celebrate being rich in friends and family, or rich with laughter, or the richness of your spiritual life, or even being rich in air and sunshine if nothing else seems to be going well for you today, material blessings will come to you more readily as well.

Feng Shui Basics

The Energy of Wind and Water

Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) literally means wind and water. Water represents the physical, manifest world while wind represents the inner world of energy that interacts with the outer. External Feng Shui is about arranging our environment, our homes and businesses to open to the energy (Chi) of Prosperity and Success. Internal Feng Shui is about exploring our inner worlds of mind/body/spirit and opening these worlds to the energy (Chi) of Health and Happiness.

EXTERNAL FENG SHUI
In arranging a room or building, 9 areas are noted to be of special significance. A Baqua Map, is used to illustrates the relationship of areas in a room (or home). Imagine dividing your room (home, office) into the following 9 areas, first clear your clutter, then place objects which reinforce the attributes of each area. In addition, in Feng Shui, nine special "cures" are noted to enhance energy flow. These cures include: Bright Objects: Mirrors, Faceted Crystal balls, gems, lights, candles; Sounds: Wind chimes, bells, music; Living Chi: Flowers, Plants, Birds, Fish; Moving: Mobiles, Chimes, Fountains; Heavy: Stone, Furniture; Mechanical: Computers, Stereos, TV; Bamboo: flutes; Color: Relates to each area on Baqua Map.

INTERNAL FENG SHUI
Just as energy circulates in a room, it also circulates in our minds and bodies. Internal Feng Shui involves the pattern of energy flows inside ourselves. These inside flows are reflected out into our environments and our environments influence the inner flows. Even the elements are similar – Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth energies circulate inside us and influence the physical health and functioning of our bodies. For example, Air energy provides movement in the nervous and circulatory systems. Tight shoulders and high stress block this energy. To promote it’s flow, eat foods that grow high in the air (fruits and nuts) and gently massage your shoulders to release tightness.

When you become distracted by a thought or feeling, label it as "thinking" or "feeling", then return to the breath. Try this daily for 5 minutes to experience the flow of Air energy within.

FENG SHUI

Feng shui (pronounced fung shway) is the idea of living in harmony and balance with our environment and dates back over 7000 years. It is the study of energy (Chi) and how it's circulation affects people. The circulation of this invisible energy can be blocked or distorted by our environment, thus creating Shar Chi (or negative energy).
Feng shui may be approached on several levels.

1. Arrange your home, office, business for good circulation of Energy.

In arranging a room, 9 areas are noted to be of special significance. The following table, also known as a Baqua Map, illustrates the relationship of areas in a room (or home) in relation to the room's Main Entrance. Imagine dividing your room (home, office) into the following 9 areas, then place objects which reinforce the attributes of each area.

Items pertaining to spiritual guidance, travel and helping
MAIN ENTRANCE*

* Note: If using the Compass Method, disregard the "main entrance" and look at the room or building by Compass Directions.

2. Use "cures" to generate energy when the structure of the room or building prevents placement of above items.

Bright Objects: Mirrors, Faceted Crystal balls, gems, lights, candles....

Sounds: Wind chimes, bells, music

Living Chi: Flowers, Plants, Birds, Fish

Moving: Mobiles, Chimes, Fountains

Heavy: Stone Sculptures, Furniture

Mechanical: Computers, Stereos, TV

Bamboo: flutes

Color: Relates to each area on Baqua Map

WHERE TO BEGIN?
Choose a room to begin. An office, bedroom, or family room will do nicely. Stand in the main door and survey each of the 8 Life Areas as illustrated in the Baqua Map. Look for "flow-less" areas, dead, empty areas or cluttered areas. Remove blocks to energy (Chi) first by cleaning and un-cluttering. Then look for accents to help energy flow.

Leaded crystals are one of the most common, and easiest cures to apply. Lead crystals increase the balance of yang (the masculine energy of heat, life, summer, day, sun and fire) energy resulting in greater energy flow and life force.

Common places to hang crystals are:

A long hall way with many doors where energy becomes "trapped". Hang the crystal from the ceiling half way down the hall to slow and disperse energy.

When a door is directly in line with a bed, desk chair, or place you spend a lot of time. Hang the crystal between the door and bed/chair so Chi (energy) will slow down.

When steps lead directly to a door. Place the crystal between the bottom steps and the door.

Wherever you wish to create a greater and smoother energy flow. Placing a crystal in each window allows sunlight to pass through, activating the Chi (energy) in a gentle, yet powerful way.
.

Mirrors are another common cure, used to deflect something negative away from you or to reflect something positive into your environment.

Common uses of mirrors include:

When a ceiling slants down above a bed or down on your head in the office, place a mirror face up with the intention of lifting the ceiling back up.

When a room you spend time in is over a garage, place a mirror face down to reflect away the energy coming up from below.

To draw a pleasant outside scene (lake, trees, sky) inside, place a mirror near a window so it reflects the scene inside the room.

By now, you have the idea. You want to open up closed areas and allow energy to flow easily. Experiment. If it feels good to you, it probably is! And most of all, have fun creating a room of well being.

Vastu Sastra

Vastu in Sanskrit means nature , a surrounding or environment. The word "Vaasthu" came from Vasthu , denoting anything existing such as house, shelter, building etc.Shastra in sanskrit means systems.Vastu shastra is an ancient art and science, containing principles and practises of constructing buildings which ensures a harmonious balance between man and nature and thereby bring all round happiness, health, wealth and prosperity.

Ancient sages of India laid down several principles for constructing buildings taking advantage of the nature, the Pancha Bhootas namely Earth,Space,Air,Fire and water, gravitational and magnetic effects and rotational influences of Sun,Moon,Earth and other planets on the life in Earth with a view to bring balance and harmony between man, nature and his buildings and thereby ensuring peace, prosperity, and happiness. These principles, calledVastu Shastra, were evolved over thousands of years out of experience and foresight of ancient Sages of India and are very valuable for the well being of man-kind. According to Shastras,if we worship, revere and respect the lords of these eight directions, they will shower on us their blessings and benefits.

Esshan ie Ishwar(North-east) - He grants us wisdom, knowledge and serve all comforts and relieves us from sufferings.

Indra(East) - He is the king of angels. He gives wealth and all pleasures of life.

Agni/Fire(South-east) - He gives us beautiful personality and all the best of life.

Yamaa or Yamaha(South) - He is god of death. He is embodiment of dharma. He eradicates evils and grants all good things.

Nissan or Niruti (South-west) - He vanishes fear about our enemies.

Varun(West) - He is god of rain. He showers his blessings through rain and brings prosperity and pleasure in life all round.

Vayu/Wind(North-west) - He bestows on us long life, health and strength. He is the basic of all life.

Kuber(North) - He is god of wealth. He grants us wealth and all comforts of life.
Who does not want all these things in life??? These gods belong to all religions, races and castes and creeds. Now-a-days,when people want to construct a house or other building, they devote more time for minute details of foundation, superstructure, comforts, look, appearance etc.without going into detailed examination as to whether such a house or building will bring them prosperity, health, wealth, wisdom and happiness in the life paving the way for progress and peaceful living or not.

Vaastu is such a vast field which really needs specialisation if someone want to study it .There are some basic favourable and unfavourable directions which we use in our daily life.

Shape of plot - Favourites are regular shaped square or rectangular plota AND irregular shaped plots are normally avoided.

Water-bodies - Water bodies in north or east are considered good.

Obstruction - Obstruction like big trees, open well, pillars and posts before a arrow like roads are to be avoided. building

Ideal site - In a square plot the house should be constructed in the for house centre and in rectangular plot it should be nearer to construction south, south west and west sides preferably leaving more in a plot open space on north and east.

"L" or Considered not suitable for house as corners will be "U" shaped missing and occupants will be missing oppurtunities. plots

Feng Shui and Vastu Altars by Feng Shui Long Island

Many of us use Altars. Some are for religious reasons (my Grandmother always had one in her home with beautiful Saints, Statues, Holy Water, Candles and a Rosary). Some are less conspicuous and seem to blend in with our décor but they are items we have of special value, they have a meaning to us and although no one else sees it, we know why they are there.

In Feng Shui some people choose to set up different types of Altars for their own "Sacred Space." Most are not elaborate and they all vary but to my clients, they all have deep and personal meanings for them. Some of my clients tend to use items that we would use in Feng Shui and address The Five Elements, an Auspicious Symbol, Color or Number. My clients do this to remind them that they have made Intentions to change the way they are living, thinking and feeling and are going to keep them. It can be a powerful, symbolic "message" to see this every day and they will also include Quotes and Words of Inspiration on here. They keep their thought positive and focused for the results they wish to accomplish.

The Altars used in the Hindu faith are often much more elaborate. While my Grandmother addressed her Saints, they also address theirs. Sometimes special rooms are created for these Altars and most of my clients of this faith will pray two to three times a day. An example of a beautiful Altar of the Hindu faith (Where we use Vastu, a method that also works on Energy and changes and is very similar to Feng Shui is used) is below.

In the Chinese and many other cultures they are taught to revere the ELDERS of the family. They have incredible knowledge and wisdom that we will not learn until we ourselves are elderly and have been though many of life's lessons. We are taught and it's an important principle in Feng Shui to "HONOR OUR ANCESTORS." Often times we will see that a client incorporates just that into their homes, with their own place of honor on a shelf or table. They may be actual pictures of someone special or an item that they owned.

I love the idea of honoring those much loved people in our lives who have passed. It gives us a place to go to speak to them and connect with them in our own special ways. To my clients that choose this, I do suggest that they keep it in one area of their home. Of course there is sadness left behind and having its own special place to contain that sadness does not have it filter through our entire space.

I myself have a small Altar but it is not something I use for myself or my beloveds but for my clients. While many Feng Shui Consultants follow ‘The Red Envelope Tradition' and I do as well, I ask my clients to remember that we are working with ENERGY. We ask for Red Envelopes when we are using a special blessing or "cure," one that has been passed down for many years and we are now passing it along to our clients. It is a form of Energy Exchange. I ask my clients to incorporate something extra, to include an Intention of what they wish to create from this consultation in each envelope. These are never read but are a further step in infusing their energy into what they wish to create....and they stay close by me for the following nine nights.

Sometimes a thought will come to me that I hadn't thought of before or I will see a room or part of a room differently then we originally discussed and will share this with my client. It sounds odd, I know, but when you're working with the sheer force of Energy, anything can happen!

If you plan to designate a space for an altar the Bagua suggests it be the left center of you home (when you enter from the front door). This is the area to Honor your Ancestors. I have found that is not always possible and believe any place my clients choose to put it creates the same Intentions.

Having an altar is a personal choice but it's something we do think about in Feng Shui. It may or may not resonate with you or you may choose different ways of incorporating one if you wish.

Vastu Shastra

Here are some things that you should watch out for when you are house-hunting.

Pooja rooms, toilets and staircases each have their correct place.

The staircase to the first and second floors is best in the southwest corner with steps rising in the east-west direction.
Never build the pooja room, kitchen and toilet next to each other.
Never construct the pooja room in fornt of the main door.
The safe should always face the north or east direction.
Try best not to build the toilet or the room under the staircase.
The north-east walls are best for wash basins, taps and mirrors.
Place the refrigerator in the north-west corner of the room.
See that the main gate will open inwards.
A tree, temple, open drain, court, jail, electrical pole are some of the things which should be avoided in front of the main entrance.
Open railings and grills are best for balconies.

You can also try the Vastu way of Success @ Office :)

Always try to sit in the southwest corner of the cabin facing north or east.
Never keep the southwest corner of the room cabin empty or vacant.
Never sit under a beam.
Never sit with your back to the door.
Sit facing east or north while working on the computer.
Place the computer, typewriter etc., towards southeast or northwest.
Place some rising portraits like mountains or flying cranes behind the seat for stability.
A wall behind the seat gives you the feeling of security.
Sitting with your back to a door or window leads to misunderstanding and quarrels with superiors, staff and colleagues, etc.
This obstacle can be avoided by keeping the window or the door closed.

The Scientific Aspect

Positive Energy & Negative Energy

"Cancer is a disease of location" said Dr Ernest Hartmann, M.D after researching in GeoBiology for 30 years. He meant that certain places on earth are infested with Negative Energy which he called Geopathic Stress. Similarly certain places have Positive Energy and these are holy places where miracles take place.

In the enviroment where we live, Negative Earth Ray exist naturally. Dr Hagar M D, after examining housing status of 5348 patients who died of cancer reported that HER ( Harmful Earth Ray ) passed through under their house by 100% of his subjects.

The German dowser Gustav von Phol's theory " No passing under Harmful Earth Ray, no cancer " was first attacked but later declared as genuine.

Effects of Negative Energy or Geopathic Stress

No soundness of sleep, some insomnia and decrease of appetite.

As per the reports by Kathe Bachler, earth Ray researcher in Australia, Dr Arnold Manliker, Dr Harger in Germany, Dr Ernest Hartmann and Nobel Laureate Melvin Calvin, cancer is produced under the influence of the Geopathic Earth Ray.

Time consuming sleep with continous dreams, nightmares and poor sleep.

The Philosophic Aspect

Today there is a demand surge for Vastu, which is implemented in all areas. Architects and interior decorators use it as well as masons.

The ground, which is the base for any construction, is equally divided into eight parts or eight directions. Each direction is governed by a specific lord and all the 12 Zodiacal Signs fit into the 8 directions.

Many are the guidelines given by Vastu for prosperous living, apart from the land demarcation.

The Eight Directions and the lords of the 8 Directions

The place for keeping Cash

The best place is North as it is ruled by Kubera, the lord of wealth in Vedic Mythology and if Cash box can be kept facing the north Eastern direction, it will be ideal.

No low ceiling houses preferred !

If a house is built with low ceiling, then the flow of cosmic energy into the house will be meagre.

A bedroom with low ceiling destroys harmony while a bedroom with slanted ceiling brings ill health. Kitchen with slanted ceilings are not called for as it will reduce prosperity.

Vastu Color Coordination

As the Nine Revolving Heavens in Astrology represent the Nine Colors ( The Seven Colors of the spectrum plus infra-red and ultra-violet), the 8 directions of Vastu represent different colors !

If different colors are used for that direction ( different from the colors stipulated by Vastu ), the effect can be quite devastating.
