Feng Shui as a Path to Personal Growth

by Stephanie Roberts

One very valuable aspect of Feng shui is that it has a tendency to bring new opportunities and relationships that encourage us to relinquish ineffective behaviors and stretch outside our comfort zones. While this is not always comfortable, it can be powerfully transforming if we rise to the challenges presented by these opportunities. When we don't, choosing instead to remain safely sheltered by familiar behaviors and attitudes, we block the transformative power of feng shui and the significant transitions we'd hoped for often don't materialize.

I always recommend to my clients that they keep a feng shui journal. This notebook becomes a place to record how you plan to correct and enhance the energy of your home, how you follow through (or not) on those plans, the energy shifts that you experience as a result of changes made, your emotional reactions to the work, and the insights you gain from taking a different and deeper look at your life.

When it seems that feng shui isn't working, it's time to take a hard look at whether your attitudes and actions are supporting what you say you want to achieve. Here are some questions to ask yourself, based on the issues that you may be working on:

Career

Am I diligent about always communicating as openly and honestly as possible?
Do I look for ways to create opportunities for others while advancing in my career?
Do my actions consistently demonstrate my abilities, or do I sometimes take the easier path?
Self-Understanding

Do I respect the spiritual beliefs of others, even when they seem limiting or misguided?
Do I help others to learn and grow, and support them in achieving greater self-awareness, or do I usually put myself first?
Am I unflinching in exploring my own needs for growth, or do I pretend my negative habits don't matter?
Family, Health

Do I honor my family and friends in "thought, word, and deed," even when they behave selfishly or inconsiderately toward me?
How am I contributing to the quality of life in my community?
Am I a mindful inhabitant and caretaker of my body?
Prosperity & Abundance

Am I generous to others, even when my financial resources are thin?
Am I comfortable receiving the generosity of others?
Am I a wise caretaker of my assets?

Fame & Reputation

Do I recognize and applaud others' accomplishments?
Do I refrain from idle or malicious gossip about friends and co-workers?
Am I comfortable being in the spotlight?
Marriage & Romance

Am I supportive and nurturing to others?
Am I able to love without clinging, or do jealousy and insecurity undermine my relationships?
Am I comfortable receiving and giving love?
Creativity & Children

Do I listen to and act on my intuition, allowing it to guide me even when I am unsure of that direction?
How do I express my creativity in my every-day life and environment?
Do I support my children as individuals, rather than trying to mold them into "mini-me"s?
Helpful Friends & Travel

Am I asking for the help I need, and allowing others to provide assistance?
Do I take advantage of opportunities to try new things and explore new places?
How can I be a greater benefactor or mentor to others?
When feng shui is applied without this commitment to self-exploration, the effects may be short-lived or disappointing. For example, you may experience an increase in cash flow as a result of feng shui, but if you are a chronic over-spender that additional money will flow out as quickly as it came in and you'll still be mired in debt. Support your feng shui changes with conscious changes to your spending habits, and that additional cash flow becomes available to help pay off your credit cards and transform your financial situation.

The effects of feng shui can be slow and subtle or immediate and seemingly miraculous. Whether you experience dramatic improvements in your situation or a frustrating lack of results, you can gain additional benefit from feng shui when you explore your inner responses to outward transformation. Make a commitment to use feng shui as a path to personal growth, rather than as a quick fix for your problems, and you will inevitably achieve greater success in all aspects of your life.

Feng Shui Money Tips

by Stephanie Roberts

Do you know where your financial "power spots" are? The contemporary methods of feng shui associate prosperity issues with the back left corner of any space. Stand at your front door facing into the house; your wealth area is at the back of the house on the left-hand side. There's also a wealth area within each room: facing in from the doorway, it's the corner area in the back of the room on the left-hand side. Where are the wealth areas within your office, living room, kitchen, and bedroom? Now that you've identified your money power spots, here are some quick and easy ways to apply feng shui to these spaces:

..by Title ..by Author ..by Keyword ..by ISBN

1. Clear out any clutter from these important areas. Clutter is a sign of stagnant energy, and clutter in your money power spots can clog up your cash flow. Getting rid of clutter is one of the most powerful ways to shift the energy of your power spots into high gear.

2. Fix things that are broken. Anything that doesn't work as it should is a sign of something wrong in the area of your life that corresponds to that part of your space. Examine each of your money power spots to look for anything that needs repair. It's time to do something about that loose doorknob, non-working light switch, stuck file drawer, or clock that doesn't keep correct time, to name just a few possible examples. Remove items like these from your power spots or fix them so they work properly.

. Enhance your power spots with symbols of prosperity, such as a bowl of coins (add your loose change to it every day), a "lucky bamboo" plant, or anything that symbolizes success and prosperity to you. There are lots of Chinese luck symbols available, but you don't have to use them unless you want to. A picture of your dream house, or a model of that luxury car you long for, is an effective money symbol because it has personal meaning for you.

4. Accent your money areas with the colors green and purple. Green symbolizes vitality and growth, and purple is the color of wealth. Place a bowl of green and purple grapes (real or artificial) in the wealth area of your kitchen, to symbolize abundance filling your home. If you use real grapes, it's okay to eat them, just add more from time to time so the grapes remain fresh and the bowl is always more than half full.

5. Pay attention to how you handle money every day. Do you keep paper money neatly sorted in your wallet or money clip, or is it jammed in there any old way, or crumpled up at the bottom of your pocket? Clean the clutter out of your purse and wallet, and start handling your money as though you value it.

6. If you neglect your money, it will neglect you, so be sure to balance your checkbook regularly and pay your bills on time. Put your checkbook in an attractive cover (choose green, purple, red, blue, or black) and keep it in the wealth area of your desk - that's the rear left corner again -- or in the wealth area of your office.

7. Live generously. Money is a form of energy, and it needs to flow through your life, not just into it. Hoarding and scrimping work against more coming in, while giving generously within your means makes space for even greater abundance. If you don't yet have ample money to share, give as generously as you can of your time, energy, compassion, and appreciation.

8. Take a few moments every evening to think about all the good things that happened to you today and to express your gratitude for what you have received. Small things count, too, so it's okay if there's little of the spectacular on your list most of the time. It's not what happened that's important; it's getting in the habit of focusing on the positive side of things every day that matters. The more you notice, appreciate, and express gratitude for blessings received, no matter how small, the more good things will come your way, including money.

A true experience of prosperity is determined not by how much money you have, but by how well you notice and enjoy what is already present in your life. The formal name for the wealth area is "fortunate blessings" - as you de-clutter, repair, and accessorize your money power spots keep this broader meaning in mind. When you celebrate being rich in friends and family, or rich with laughter, or the richness of your spiritual life, or even being rich in air and sunshine if nothing else seems to be going well for you today, material blessings will come to you more readily as well.

Feng Shui Basics

The Energy of Wind and Water

Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) literally means wind and water. Water represents the physical, manifest world while wind represents the inner world of energy that interacts with the outer. External Feng Shui is about arranging our environment, our homes and businesses to open to the energy (Chi) of Prosperity and Success. Internal Feng Shui is about exploring our inner worlds of mind/body/spirit and opening these worlds to the energy (Chi) of Health and Happiness.

EXTERNAL FENG SHUI
In arranging a room or building, 9 areas are noted to be of special significance. A Baqua Map, is used to illustrates the relationship of areas in a room (or home). Imagine dividing your room (home, office) into the following 9 areas, first clear your clutter, then place objects which reinforce the attributes of each area. In addition, in Feng Shui, nine special "cures" are noted to enhance energy flow. These cures include: Bright Objects: Mirrors, Faceted Crystal balls, gems, lights, candles; Sounds: Wind chimes, bells, music; Living Chi: Flowers, Plants, Birds, Fish; Moving: Mobiles, Chimes, Fountains; Heavy: Stone, Furniture; Mechanical: Computers, Stereos, TV; Bamboo: flutes; Color: Relates to each area on Baqua Map.

INTERNAL FENG SHUI
Just as energy circulates in a room, it also circulates in our minds and bodies. Internal Feng Shui involves the pattern of energy flows inside ourselves. These inside flows are reflected out into our environments and our environments influence the inner flows. Even the elements are similar – Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth energies circulate inside us and influence the physical health and functioning of our bodies. For example, Air energy provides movement in the nervous and circulatory systems. Tight shoulders and high stress block this energy. To promote it’s flow, eat foods that grow high in the air (fruits and nuts) and gently massage your shoulders to release tightness.

Energize Water with vegetables & melon type foods and soothing baths or trips to the ocean. Earth

Energize Air with foods that grow high on trees and yoga or meditation to loosen shoulders & decrease stress.

Air energy may also be released for health and healing through mindfulness meditation. Simply sit, close your eyes and feel the air of your breath moving in and out of your nose. Focus on the breath. When you become distracted by a thought or feeling, label it as "thinking" or "feeling", then return to the breath. Try this daily for 5 minutes to experience the flow of Air energy within.

FENG SHUI

Feng shui (pronounced fung shway) is the idea of living in harmony and balance with our environment and dates back over 7000 years. It is the study of energy (Chi) and how it's circulation affects people. The circulation of this invisible energy can be blocked or distorted by our environment, thus creating Shar Chi (or negative energy).
Feng shui may be approached on several levels.

1. Arrange your home, office, business for good circulation of Energy.

In arranging a room, 9 areas are noted to be of special significance. The following table, also known as a Baqua Map, illustrates the relationship of areas in a room (or home) in relation to the room's Main Entrance. Imagine dividing your room (home, office) into the following 9 areas, then place objects which reinforce the attributes of each area.

MAIN ENTRANCE*

* Note: If using the Compass Method, disregard the "main entrance" and look at the room or building by Compass Directions.

2. Use "cures" to generate energy when the structure of the room or building prevents placement of above items.

Bright Objects: Mirrors, Faceted Crystal balls, gems, lights, candles....

Sounds: Wind chimes, bells, music

Living Chi: Flowers, Plants, Birds, Fish

Moving: Mobiles, Chimes, Fountains

Heavy: Stone Sculptures, Furniture

Mechanical: Computers, Stereos, TV

Bamboo: flutes

Color: Relates to each area on Baqua Map

WHERE TO BEGIN?
Choose a room to begin. An office, bedroom, or family room will do nicely. Stand in the main door and survey each of the 8 Life Areas as illustrated in the Baqua Map. Look for "flow-less" areas, dead, empty areas or cluttered areas. Remove blocks to energy (Chi) first by cleaning and un-cluttering. Then look for accents to help energy flow.

Leaded crystals are one of the most common, and easiest cures to apply. Lead crystals increase the balance of yang (the masculine energy of heat, life, summer, day, sun and fire) energy resulting in greater energy flow and life force.

Common places to hang crystals are:

A long hall way with many doors where energy becomes "trapped". Hang the crystal from the ceiling half way down the hall to slow and disperse energy.

When a door is directly in line with a bed, desk chair, or place you spend a lot of time. Hang the crystal between the door and bed/chair so Chi (energy) will slow down.

When steps lead directly to a door. Place the crystal between the bottom steps and the door.

Wherever you wish to create a greater and smoother energy flow. Placing a crystal in each window allows sunlight to pass through, activating the Chi (energy) in a gentle, yet powerful way.
.

Mirrors are another common cure, used to deflect something negative away from you or to reflect something positive into your environment.

Common uses of mirrors include:

When a ceiling slants down above a bed or down on your head in the office, place a mirror face up with the intention of lifting the ceiling back up.

When a room you spend time in is over a garage, place a mirror face down to reflect away the energy coming up from below.

To draw a pleasant outside scene (lake, trees, sky) inside, place a mirror near a window so it reflects the scene inside the room.

By now, you have the idea. You want to open up closed areas and allow energy to flow easily. Experiment. If it feels good to you, it probably is! And most of all, have fun creating a room of well being.
